The 6 Speed Killers We See on Every Slow Website
1. Unoptimized Images
This is the number one offender. We see dental practices uploading 4,000 x 3,000 pixel photos straight from their camera — 3-5 MB each. A homepage with 6 such images adds 20+ MB of data. The image should be resized to the display size (typically 800-1200 pixels wide), compressed, and served in modern formats like WebP or AVIF. A 3 MB image can typically be reduced to 80-150 KB with no visible quality loss.
2. Too Many Plugins
The average WordPress site has 20-30 plugins installed. Each one adds JavaScript and CSS files that must load before the page renders. We audited one contractor website with 47 active plugins — 38 of which were either redundant or unused. Removing unnecessary plugins cut their load time from 8.2 seconds to 2.9 seconds.
3. Cheap Shared Hosting
Budget hosting ($3-5/month) puts your website on a server shared with hundreds of other sites. When any of those sites get traffic spikes, your site slows down. 4. Render-Blocking Scripts
JavaScript and CSS files that load in the document head block the browser from rendering anything until they finish downloading. 5. No Browser Caching
Without proper caching headers, returning visitors download every file from scratch every time. Caching lets the browser store static files locally so repeat visits load near-instantly. 6. No Content Delivery Network (CDN)
A CDN distributes your website files across servers worldwide so visitors download from the nearest location. Without one, a visitor in Los Angeles requesting files from a server in New York adds 70-100 milliseconds of latency per request. A CDN eliminates this geography penalty.
How to Fix Your Website Speed

- Compress and resize images. Use tools like ShortPixel or Squoosh. Convert to WebP format. This alone can cut load times by 50-70%.
- Remove unused plugins and scripts. Audit every JavaScript file loading on your page. If you do not know what it does, it probably does not need to be there.
- Upgrade your hosting. Move to a quality host or a platform with built-in static hosting and CDN delivery.
